Through a synthesis of deconstruction & re-arrangement of surface & object, Hopewell’s approach to sculpture is predominantly about the transformation of materials by juxtaposing mediums & disciplines. By incorporating sculptural objects & painting together, the work shifts into a parallax dimension. In Hopewell’s ‘reality charged’ pieces, the repetition of painted vectors & gestures become charged by the inclusion of the structural grids, found in steel security fencing & wire mesh. The works are further charged by the shadows projected by the objects onto the surface of the paintwork. Hauntological elements evolve in other works when spray traces are left behind like ghosts, upon the absence of the object, providing another dimensional quality to the work.
